Working with children and infants

This course has been developed for those who work with children and infants.

It is of particular interest to teachers, child minders, crèche assistants, playgroup personnel, and anyone who has responsibility for the welfare of children and infants in their care.

In addition, it is ideal for individuals who wish to gain a nationally accredited Level 2 Award for responsibility when looking after children and infants.

The two photos

The first photo is of a small child who has suffered a cardiac arrest. What would you do? The second is a child who is choking. What would you do?

Course length

This one or two day course satisfies the guidelines and criteria as laid down by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and OFSTED.

In order to obtain this qualification, attendance on both days and completion of the two units of accreditation is required.

A minimum of 12 hours makes up these two units consisting of theoretical and practical work.

  • Eye injuries
  • Heat and cold
  • Asthma
  • Sickle cell anaemia


Assessment is ongoing by the instructor in respect of the student’s practical skills followed by a multiple choice questionnaire to verify knowledge.

A three year certificate will be issued subject to assessment.

Course numbers

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course.

Age limit

Students must be a minimum of 14 years of age and a certificate can be offered to all, subject to assessment.

A student cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace for children and infants until they reach the age of 16, after which it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable for that role.

The certificate will expire as dated on the certificate, irrespective of age.
